3GPP announces Release 16 completion
The 3GPP has announced that, as agreed at the TSG#88e Plenary meetings ending 3 July 2020, Release 16 has been completed with the Stage 3 freeze and the ASN.1 and OpenAPI specification freeze being approved.
At that same meeting, the 3GPP leadership set the Release 17 timeline for completion targets, being September 2021 for the Stage 3 freeze and December 2021 for the ASN.1 and OpenAPI specification freeze.
According to the 3GPP, discussions at TSG#88-e Plenaries identified that the Release 17 dates are at a high risk of being delayed due to the switch from physical meetings to e-meetings, and that the Release 17 dates may have to be shifted.
