Indonesia wants its own military comms satellite

Indonesia is setting aside US$699 million to purchase a new military communications satellite from Airbus Defence and Space to reduce the country’s reliance on services provided by other countries.

According to a report in the Jakarta Post, Asril Tanjung, deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Commission that oversees defence and foreign affairs, said that “Indonesia could secure the country’s interests since the satellite would be operated independently by the Defense Ministry. The procurement is important since other countries already have their own satellite, which is ideal since [military communication] is secretive in nature.”

The country is aiming for launch of the satellite in 2018.
