Kiwirail radio system wins excellence award

Thursday, 25 November, 2010

KiwiRail and Xworks Radio Interoperability Systems won the Information, Communication Electrical and Electronic Technology category at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards in Wellington.

The ORC400 is a custom-designed solution that allows KiwiRail to integrate its mobile radio systems with modern digital IP networks and computer systems. The product supports a range of protocols in both the mobile radio and IP worlds and has diagnostic capability.

The final product is a flexible, fully integrated, low-bandwidth, vendor-neutral RoIP solution for bridging mobile radio networks and IP networks and can be used with KiwiRail’s dispatch software.

This has enabled KiwiRail to replace dedicated leased lines with cheaper IP connections that are often already in place in the company’s information technology infrastructure.

The ICCET award recognises activities associated with the development of improved or new communications hardware and/or software embedded systems, broadcasting, telecommunications, electrical or electronic products and controls.
