DC-UPS supports mission-critical underground comms

An Australian communications industry leader, renowned for its work in underground and remote communications systems, recently approached ADM Systems in search for a DC-UPS back-up power system to support a ‘leaky feeder’ communication system within a large underground mining installation.

A leaky feeder communication system, also known as radiating cables, is the RF communications backbone of underground mining and tunnelling environments because solid rock and ore bodies effectively prevent line-of-sight systems from functioning. Leaky feeder systems consist of cables run along an underground tunnel that emit and receive radio waves, effectively operating as a continuous, distributed antenna along declines, drifts and slopes in these environments. The cable is ‘leaky’ because it has gaps or slots along its outer conductor that allow the radio signal to leak in or out along its entire length.

Leaky feeder systems are a mission-critical communication element of mining and tunnelling operations and, in turn, require a robust and reliable DC-UPS system to ensure these communications maintain operation in the event of an unplanned power outage. For this installation, the ADM team recommended the ADELSystem CBI1210A DIN rail-mounted DC-UPS for its all-in-one capability, combining power supply, battery charger and back-up power management in a single module.

The key capabilities of the CBI series enable zero-switchover capability from AC mains to DC battery, also enabling continuous battery connection and load testing at user-set intervals, with alarms, warnings and sensors all enabled to be monitored remotely — everything to ensure back-up power systems remain prepared for an unplanned outage during operations. The series is backed by ADELSystem’s 35+ years of producing robust, reliable and responsive DC-UPS for mission-critical systems.

ADM Systems prides itself on helping customers in their times of need, with a team of technical experts to ensure they have the right tool for the job and ready technical support when required. The company will be exhibiting at Comms Connect Melbourne from 14–15 October on Stand 36.
