Aircraft pilots face many challenges in their day-to-day activities, ranging from unpredictable weather conditions to monitoring and adjusting the flight instruments in a cockpit. With all this and more taking place, there is perhaps no more critical need of reliable communications than when in control of an aircraft.

The Icom IC-A15 VHF air-band transceiver is specifically designed to be easy-to-use and reliable, so that pilots can stick to the job at hand, without having the concern of whether communications will be transmitted and received effectively.

As air band radios are usually operated in high-noise environments, it is essential that the audio output of the unit is sufficient to cut through and be heard by the user. The IC-A15 includes an internal speaker with a 700 mW output, coupled with a bridge-tied load (BTL) amplifier that provides loud and clear audio.

The unit features the MIL-STD 810 military specification seal of approval and is water resistant, with an IPX4 rating. The large-capacity lithium-ion battery (2000 mAh) provides up to 18 hours operating time (tx:rx:standby=5:5:90). This provides the user with peace of mind, as not only is the unit built to withstand tough conditions, it also ensures that the battery will last the length of the flight.

The full keypad allows the user to input the frequency directly and has an exclusive button for the 121.5 MHz emergency channel. A total of 200 memory channels is included and these can be grouped into 10 banks for ease-of-use.

The eight-character backlit LCD allows the user to assign a channel name for easy recognition. Also included is a side-tone function, which allows operator’s to hear their own voices via a third-party aviation headset.
