When boating, perhaps one of the most important safety tools is a reliable marine radio. With the 27 MHz system now becoming less recognised and monitored, there is no better time to switch to VHF, and enjoy the added clarity and range that it offers.

A handheld VHF radio is often the preferred choice for those with limited space for mounting or as a backup/grab bag communication device. When it comes to handheld marine radios, Icom’s IC-M35 is able to float should the optional speaker microphone (HM-165) be attached. Given that the unit floats, the IC-M35 is also carries a water ingress protection rating of IPX7, meaning it is waterproof to a one metre depth for 30 minutes.

Adding to the floating capabilities of the radio, the company has also introduced ‘clear voice boost’. This is useful in marine environments, as there are many sources of noise which can affect the quality of communication, such as engine noise and crashing waves.

To create clear communications, a noise-cancelling microphone is included, which eliminates ambient noise from the main microphone. As a result, the radio reduces the effect of the background noise from the transmitted signal, making it easier to hear voice transmission.

An automatic volume adjustment also aids clarity, by increasing the volume level to suit the environment and the instant ‘loud’ button allows the user to switch instantly to maximum volume.

The radio also offers a practical eight-hour operating time between charges, due to current-saving circuitry. The large, backlit buttons and LCD offer ease-of-use, even during extreme conditions. Dual/tri watch functions are also a feature, meaning the user can switch between favourite channels.
