QAS emergency nerve centre opens ahead of GC2018
The Queensland Ambulance Service’s (QAS) coordination ‘nerve centre’ is now ready to go, ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The Emergency and Fleet Management Precinct and ambulance station at Geebung have been officially opened.
It is expected that the new multimillion-dollar facility will play a vital role during GC2018.
“When we think about major events, whether they be natural disasters or international sporting showpieces, our emergency services are front and centre,” said Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles.
“This new state-of-the-art facility is where the QAS is planning, implementing and directing its response for GC2018, and will be the coordination hub during other major incidents and events.”
Member for Nudgee, Leanne Linard, said the new station was a welcome addition to the region.
“The Palaczszuk government invested around $13 million to purchase and develop this new facility to enhance ambulance services and keep Queenslanders safe when disasters strike,” she said.
“The precinct also provides a state-of-the-art workshop where qualified technical staff oversee the commissioning of new and replacement vehicles and equipment, additional office space and a new 24-hour ambulance station for our growing region.”
The precinct enables the organisation to have its planning and incident management, various deployment resources and vehicle assets all under the one roof.
“The ability to have multiple QAS functions within the one precinct will boost efficiencies and enable our paramedics and staff to continue to provide high-quality pre-hospital care to the community,” said QAS Commissioner Russell Bowles.
“Furthermore, this facility was designed specifically to better meet the needs of the QAS and allows for further growth of our service as required.”
The precinct is strategically located so ambulances can access the surrounding road network, including Sandgate and Gympie Roads, Southern Cross Way and the Gateway Motorway.
