Optus makes 5G data call over 2300 MHz spectrum

Optus has established an end-to-end 5G data call over its 2300 MHz spectrum, in what the company is calling a world first.

The Sydney-based call was completed with the help of technology partner Ericsson, Optus said. 

Optus currently owns spectrum in the 2300 and 3500 MHz bands, allowing it to work on a dual-band 5G network that will ultimately provide users with more 5G capacity and coverage than a single-band 3500 MHz version available today, according to the company.

“We are actively pushing forward with our robust 5G deployment plan utilising the 3500 MHz spectrum band and have more than 300 5G sites now live. At this stage we are working towards deploying our 2300 MHz spectrum some time during 2020, which together with our existing 3500 MHz spectrum will offer our customers a world-leading 5G experience both in the home and on the go,” Optus Managing Director Networks Dennis Wong said.

Optus currently has 5G sites live across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and other locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
