Pivotel partners for next-gen Iridium system
Australian satcoms provider Pivotel will be a launch partner for Iridium’s next-generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT.
The Iridium Certus solution will provide high-speed mobile data coverage across the entire globe, including oceans, deserts, airways and polar regions.
Using the new Iridium NEXT satellite constellation, Certus will eventually offer data speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps while on the move, using lightweight, small-form-factor antennas.
Pivotel CEO Peter Bolger said the enhanced satellite constellation will provide the ability to leverage the industrial internet from almost anywhere on the planet.
“The productivity and safety benefits that will flow from Certus will help secure the future of many regional businesses,” Bolger said.
Bolger added that regional emergency services providers will be one of the most important markets for the service.
Pivotel offers Iridium’s solutions using standard 04 Australian mobile numbers and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Iridium Communications is spending US$3 billion to replace its current constellation of satellites with the more powerful Iridium NEXT satellites.
There have been four successful Iridium NEXT launches, with four more launches planned for this year. Certus is slated for commercial availability in mid-2018.
